Ha, b/c I don't know how to get invited to events like this (and I have what most likely amounts to the same size tower of CDs from all the record label mailings), I invented my own beer and blogging event, only, I ended up writing a book and THEN started publishing a blog. Sorta bass ackwards, but hey, it works (and was fun). My road trip went all through the US ("Red, White and Brew" comes out at the end of this month) but would love to do a similar one for Canada (if they'd let me become a dual citizen and move to BC that is).
Cheers,
Brian

Lex - You can feel as dirty as you'd like. Or not. Who am I to judge? ;)

Shawn - To be honest, I exaggerated things a bit for dramatic effect in this post. I actually have no problem with writing something negative about a beer (or anything else) even if it was free. My comments about most of the beer we had at the Molson event probably makes that obvious.

I also don't have a big problem with the idea of accepting freebees in general. As with my years of music writing and DJing, I view promos as a part of the beer writing business, and as long as I'm up front about it when I'm writing about stuff I got for free AND give my honest opinion in all cases, I don't see any issue with it.

(apologies if this is a double-post... not sure if the first went through...)

I think that a trait of human nature is to be nice and polite in return to someone who is nice and polite to us - so it is likely that freebies impact articles to some extent. That extent can vary significantly between writers, so I guess it's up to long-term readers to decide how much weight to assign to a particular writer. Andy Crouch has written some interesting comments on the subject.

Greg - you don't seem to be afraid to express negative comments when that's how you feel, and that gives more credence to your positive reviews.

As a reader, I appreciate getting an "they gave me free stuff disclaimer" at the beginning of any article that may be affected.

I too enjoyed the freshness of the beer, the tasty tidbits and the tour of the brewery. Big shiny cylinders of brew, so much like a science experiment it's hard to walk away.

I've posted photos. Does that mean I should feel dirty too?
